VIDEO PRODUCTION GUIDE

How Long Does Video Production Take?

A professionally produced business video can take anywhere from a couple of weeks to several months. The timeline depends on the complexity of the idea, the number of filming locations, the people involved and the amount of editing required.

For many corporate videos, brand films and customer testimonials, a realistic timeline is approximately three to six weeks from the first planning conversation to final delivery. Smaller projects can move faster, while commercials and productions involving multiple locations, actors or complex visual effects require more time.

FROM CONCEPT TO DELIVERY

A Typical Video Production Timeline

Every project is different, but most follow these five stages.

01

Discovery & Planning

2–5 days

02

Preproduction

1–3 weeks

03

Filming

1–3 days

04

First Edit

1–3 weeks

05

Revisions & Delivery

Several days to 2 weeks

01DEFINE THE PURPOSE

Discovery and Creative Planning

Before discussing cameras or filming dates, the production team needs to understand what the video is supposed to accomplish.

This stage defines:

  • The intended audience
  • The primary message
  • Where the video will be used
  • The desired style and tone
  • The number and length of the deliverables
  • The available budget
  • The required completion date

A straightforward interview or testimonial project may only require a few days of planning. A larger brand film or commercial may need several weeks of creative development before production begins. If you are still determining the appropriate scope, our guide to video production costs in Miami explains how planning, crew, locations and deliverables affect the budget.

Starting with a clear objective prevents the final video from becoming visually impressive but strategically unfocused.

02BUILD THE PLAN

Preproduction

Preproduction turns the initial idea into an executable plan.

Depending on the project, this can include:

  • Concept development
  • Interview questions
  • Scriptwriting
  • Shot lists
  • Location scouting
  • Crew coordination
  • Talent or casting
  • Scheduling
  • Permits and insurance
  • Wardrobe and set preparation

For a typical corporate video, preproduction may take one to three weeks. This stage can move quickly when decision-makers respond promptly and locations and participants are already confirmed.

03CAPTURE THE STORY

The Production Day

Many corporate video productions—including interviews, testimonials and company videos—can be filmed in one day. More ambitious productions may require several days.

A production day includes more than the time spent recording. The crew must unload equipment, prepare the location, build the lighting, test the sound and position the cameras before filming begins.

01Prepare location
02Build lighting
03Test sound
04Position cameras

Moving to another room or location often requires part of that setup to be rebuilt. That is why a video with several apparently simple scenes can require a full production day.

A realistic schedule protects the quality of the work and keeps participants from feeling rushed.

04SHAPE THE STORY

Editing and Postproduction

Once filming is complete, the editor organizes the footage and begins constructing the story.

  • Reviewing and organizing footage
  • Selecting the strongest interview moments
  • Building the narrative
  • Editing B-roll
  • Color correction and grading
  • Audio cleanup and mixing
  • Music licensing
  • Titles and motion graphics
  • Captions
  • Social-media versions
  • Client revisions

A first draft may take one to three weeks, depending on the volume of footage and complexity of the final video.

“A two-minute brand film can require more editing than a much longer presentation because every shot, statement and transition must contribute to a concise story.”
05REFINE & DELIVER

Review and Revisions

After receiving the first cut, the client reviews the video and provides feedback.

One clear response

Consolidated comments keep revisions focused and efficient.

Conflicting feedback

Separate directions from several decision-makers can add considerable time.

Most professional proposals include a defined number of revision rounds. Additional changes, new creative directions or replacement materials may extend the original schedule.

COMMON BOTTLENECKS

What Can Delay a Video Project?

Most delays happen around production—not during filming itself.

01

Waiting for scripts or interview approvals

02

Difficulty coordinating executives

03

Location-access restrictions

04

Late changes to the concept

05

Missing logos or brand assets

06

Multiple reviewers giving separate feedback

07

New deliverables added after filming

08

Weather affecting exterior scenes

Many of these delays can be prevented by identifying one primary client contact and approving the creative direction before production.

RUSH PRODUCTION

Can Video Production Be Completed Faster?

Yes. Some interview projects, event videos and straightforward social content can be completed on accelerated timelines.

Faster delivery may require a simplified concept, immediate client feedback and additional editing resources. Rush production may also involve an additional cost.

The best approach is to communicate the actual deadline at the beginning of the conversation. A good production company can then recommend a scope that fits the available time.

PLAN WITH THE LAUNCH IN MIND

Start With the Deadline and Work Backward

There is no universal timeline for every video. A focused executive interview and a multi-location brand campaign should not follow the same schedule.

For most businesses, beginning the conversation at least four to six weeks before the desired launch provides enough time for thoughtful planning, professional filming and a proper review process.

Osiris Photo & Film provides owner-led video production in Miami for businesses, agencies and organizations throughout South Florida. Every project begins with a clear scope, production plan and delivery schedule so the process is understood before filming begins.
